The Summer Empire
Even now, two generations after the fall of the Nations of the Night, the Nobility remain the greatest villains anyone in the Summer Empire knows. Parents tell their children that misbehavior will lead to the Nobility coming to claim them, aethernauts watch the skies for the actions of Noble pirates, and all of Summer Empire’s politicians wonder if their opponents are actually under Noble influence. Over a thousand years of vampiric dominion will not be shaken off overnight.
Polla hasn’t been enNobled long—only a few short years—but she’s already proved herself as an able pirate captain, preying on the water trade in the lower reach. Her blood-red flag and black sails are already feared by those who ply the trading lanes.
Polla is a stocky kurai women, with enormous black eyes and chalk-white skin. She has several rings in her left ear and an enormous scar on the right arm, and she usually tears off her right sleeve to display the scar while in battle.

Four Sun Lynx
Four Sun Lynx was born to a nomadic tribe in Malak four centuries ago. His history since then has mostly been lost as he was never a ruling Noble, and it is believed that he died in the Dawn War when the jihad swept over Malak’s deserts.
That belief is wrong. Four Sun Lynx is still alive, waiting in the ruins of his old laboratory. The upper area is kept carefully ruined, though he restocks it with his experiments to discourage exploration, but the lower levels remain fully intact. There, he performs his research, occasionally adding a wandering explorer or adventure-seeker to his stock of raw materials. The Nations of the Night may be gone, but all that means to Four Sun Lynx is now, finally, he can practice science in peace.
